Total hip arthroplasty

Within the medical tourism market, one of the most sought-after options by patients is total hip arthroplasty, performed in Mexico by highly competent surgeons. This specialized practice is a resort that patients from different parts of the world, especially from the United States and Canada, resort to due to affordable care and high-quality procedures to improve hip problems.

Whenever a surgery of this nature is required, access to hip replacement surgery at a competent medical center is recommended, which stands out for having a highly qualified team, advanced technology equipment and techniques, and plans with competitive prices.

What does hip arthroplasty consist of?

It is a medical technique where the extraction and replacement of parts of the pelvis and femur, as well as part of the hip joint, are sought. This option allows for relieving hip pain and stiffness generated by hip arthritis.

This surgery is also implemented to treat conditions or injuries such as a broken or improperly growing hip and other conditions in this area of the body.

Anatomy of the Hip

The hip is a type of ball-and-socket joint, a kind of ball located at the top of the femur, i.e., the thigh bone, which is also known as the femoral head.

The socket or acetabulum is part of the pelvis. The ball is responsible for moving within the socket, allowing the leg to rotate and move forward, sideways, and backward.

In a healthy hip, soft tissue known as cartilage covers the ball and socket, helping them slide smoothly together. If this cartilage wears away or becomes damaged, the bones may rub against each other and become rough. This condition is called osteoarthritis, and it causes pain and limits movement.

An arthritic hip can cause pain when walking, sitting, or rising from a chair. If hip arthritis is diagnosed, there is a possibility of not needing surgery. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or physiotherapy may provide relief. However, suppose treatment under these conditions does not yield good results. In that case, it is advisable to consult with an orthopedic surgeon to determine if this medical practice is the option to consider.

What is the most successful type of hip replacement?

Among the main types of hip prostheses are the following:

  • Partial hip prosthesis.
  • Total hip arthroplasty.
  • Hip surface replacement.

One of the most commonly used is total hip arthroplasty. In this surgery, the worn-out or damaged parts of the hip are replaced by artificial implants. In this case, the socket is replaced by a durable plastic cup, which may or may not include a titanium metal shell.

The femoral head is removed and replaced by a ceramic or metal alloy ball for surgery in this category. The new piece is attached to a metal stem that is inserted into the top of the femur.

It is important to note that other types of hip prostheses are appropriate for patients of certain ages and activity levels.

Partial hip arthroplasty. This medical procedure involves replacing only one side of the hip joint (femoral head) rather than both sides, as is the case with total hip arthroplasty. It is performed on older adults who have suffered a hip fracture.

The surface prosthesis of the femoral head and socket is a medical practice recommended for younger and more active patients.

How is hip prosthesis surgery performed?

Two essential surgical approaches are distinguished for carrying out a total hip arthroplasty:

The posterior approach (one of the most used).

The anterior approach is also known as muscle-sparing hip replacement or mini-anterior approach.

For this type of hip operation, the surgeon is responsible for making incisions in the posterior or anterior area of the hip. These two approaches relieve pain and improve gait and movement within a few weeks of the hip prosthesis surgery.

To succeed in these operations, patients must follow the recommendations and instructions of the orthopedic surgeon, medical team, and rehabilitation therapist.

How long does a hip arthroplasty surgery last?

Total hip arthroplasty can last about 2 hours. Many patients remain in the hospital for one or two days after surgery.

How long does the recovery from a hip prosthesis take?

The recovery process begins within 24 hours after the operation is performed. Most hip prosthesis patients start walking with the support of a cane, crutches, or walker within one or two days after the medical intervention.

As the days go by, the distance and frequency of walking will increase. Total recovery can last between two and eight weeks, depending on the patient’s health status and evolution, among other factors.

What should I do after the operation?

Here are some measures to consider for the recovery process:

  • It is necessary to stay in the hospital for about two or three days after the surgical intervention.
  • Showering should be avoided during the first 24 hours.
  • A physiotherapist will provide guidance on appropriate exercises to strengthen the muscles around the new hip joint the day after surgery.
  • After the first three days, it should be easier to move around. It is recommended that a family member or close person help attend to any needs that may arise.
  • It is important to properly care for the area around the incision. It should be kept dry, and creams, ointments, and lotions should not be used. To relieve pain, an ice pack can be applied to the treated area for about 10-15 minutes continuously.
  • The stitches can be removed after two weeks. In this case, the specialist may suggest waiting for 1 to 2 more days before showering or getting the wound area wet. At this stage, the pain should be less intense, and pain relievers may no longer be needed.
  • Between the third and sixth week, most light activities customary in daily life can be performed. However, certain discomforts may be felt, especially at the end of the day. Six weeks after surgery, it may be possible to drive again.
  • Finally, between weeks 10 and 12, almost total improvement should be felt again. Much of the pain may have disappeared altogether. Inflammation has been significantly reduced. It will be easier to move and resume most routine activities.

Will my new hip set off the airport metal detector?

Current control sensors can detect the hip prosthesis or implant. However, the operator will know that it is an implant, not an unauthorized metal object.

It is advisable to notify airport security personnel about having undergone hip prosthesis surgery before going through the control machine.
